Steel piers driven past the active zone reach material whose moisture content is effectively stable year-round, which is the mechanical precondition for long-term settlement resistance.
Galvanizing matters here because Central Texas soils are not benign chemically. The clay minerals that give Houston Black its high plasticity also contribute to moderate corrosivity in some horizons, and sulfate concentrations vary across the region.
