Not every crack means your foundation is failing, and not every hairline is harmless. The difference is rarely the crack you see today. It is what that crack does over the next few months, and where and how it sits.
Start with location, not width
The first question is not how wide but where. A crack in a drywall corner above a doorway tells a different story than a crack running diagonally across a slab or stepping through the mortar joints of a brick veneer. Cosmetic finishes crack for many reasons, including normal curing and seasonal humidity. Structural elements, the slab edge, grade beams, load-bearing walls and the brick that hangs on the frame, crack because something underneath them moved.
In Central Texas the thing that moves is usually the soil. On the Blackland Prairie east and south of the Balcones Escarpment, Houston Black expansive clay swells when it rains and shrinks in drought, cycling as the seasons flip. West and north of the escarpment, thin soils sit over Edwards limestone and behave very differently. Knowing which side of that line your home is on shapes how seriously to take a given crack.
Group what you see by where it lives before you judge severity. The same 1/8-inch gap means one thing over a window and another at the base of an exterior wall.
- Interior finish cracks: drywall corners, over doors and windows, ceiling-to-wall seams.
- Structural masonry: brick veneer, especially stair-step cracks through mortar.
- Slab and grade beam: visible edge cracks, cracks in a garage or exposed slab.

The four signals that separate cosmetic from serious
Four observations do most of the sorting. Width matters, but as a rough gate, not a verdict: true hairline cracks are barely wider than a coin's edge, while cracks you can slip a nickel or a pencil tip into deserve attention. Width change over time matters more, because a stable crack and a growing crack are different problems even at the same size today.
Displacement is the signal homeowners underweight. Run a finger across the crack. If the two sides are flush, it is a simple separation. If one side sits proud of the other, out of plane, the wall or slab is not just cracking, it is moving differently on each side of the line. Pattern ties it together: horizontal, vertical, diagonal or stair-step each point at different forces. Diagonal cracks radiating from the upper corners of doors and windows, and stair-step cracks in brick, are classic signs of differential foundation movement.
No single signal is a diagnosis. A wide but stable, flush, vertical crack in a garage slab can be nothing. A narrow crack that is widening, offset, and stair-stepping across the back of the house is worth an evaluation even though it looks smaller.
Turn observation into evidence
The most useful thing you can do costs almost nothing: measure and date what you see. Guessing whether a crack has grown is unreliable, and memory is worse. A few marked measurements over a season turn a vague worry into evidence an engineer or contractor can actually use.
Take dated photos with a coin or ruler in frame. Pencil a light tick mark at each end of a crack and write the date next to it, so you can tell later whether it has lengthened. For width, draw a line across the crack and note the gap, or check it against a common object. Then watch it across a wet-to-dry swing, roughly spring into late summer here, because Central Texas movement is seasonal and a crack that opens and closes with the weather behaves differently than one that only opens.

Cracks that are widening month over month, cracks with real displacement where one side is offset from the other, stair-step cracks in brick paired with sticking doors, and anything horizontal in a foundation wall all belong in that category.

The cracks in a Central Texas home are usually a readout of the soil beneath it. Houston Black and related Blackland Prairie clays are highly expansive, with plasticity indices commonly in the 40 to 60 range. That number is a measure of how much the clay's volume responds to moisture: high-PI clay can lift a slab edge after a soaking rain and drop it again during a dry spell.
This shrink-swell happens in an active zone, typically around 6 to 15 feet deep, where seasonal moisture actually reaches. Below it, moisture and volume stay comparatively stable. That distinction is the whole logic behind deep piering: a repair that only reaches into the active zone is anchored in the very soil that keeps moving, while support carried to stable, load-bearing strata is not.
Movement is rarely uniform, and that is why patterns matter. The house settles differently in different places, and differential movement is exactly what produces diagonal cracks at openings and stair-steps in brick. West of the Balcones Escarpment, over thinner soils on limestone, the same house would likely tell a quieter story.
