The plants you set along the house shape how much water the soil around your foundation gains and loses. On Central Texas expansive clay, that moisture story is the whole game, so a thoughtful landscape plan is quietly one of the best things you can do for a slab.
Why landscaping matters more on expansive clay

Soil like that swells when it takes on water and shrinks when it dries, and the top several feet, often the active zone reaching roughly 6-15 feet deep, is where that movement happens. Before you build a bed up, look at where the water will go in a hard rain.
Leave yourself room to see and service the things that move water. Downspout outlets, splash blocks, French-drain outfalls, and grade transitions all need to stay visible and clear; a shrub swallowing a downspout means you find the clog only after the damage. Coordinating beds with your gutters and water control keeps roof water heading away from the slab instead of into a flower bed.

Mulch depth and keeping soil off the cladding

Keep mulch to a modest depth, commonly two to three inches, and pull it back from the base of the wall rather than mounding it against the siding, brick weep holes, or the weather barrier.
