Saturating the clay right against the foundation invites lateral swell that can load the structure unevenly, even after underpinning. Steady and modest beats heavy and occasional.
After the work is done, what do I need to do about drainage?
The finished grade should fall at least 6 inches over the first 10 feet away from the house so water can't pond and recharge the clay next to your newly leveled areas. If your lot can't shed water on its own, correcting that is what keeps the repair holding, we'll flag it during the survey if it matters.
Will the foundation move again once it's piered?
The piered sections are carried on steel below the active soil, so they shouldn't ride the seasons anymore, that's exactly what the lifetime transferable warranty covers.
