Why Converse slabs move when the rest of the block looks fine
The clays under most Converse neighborhoods carry a plasticity index between 40 and 60 or higher, meaning the soil's volume is tied almost directly to how much water it's holding. These are vertisols, dark prairie clay that drinks moisture like a sponge and can lift a slab several inches over a few days after heavy rain, then crack laterally as it dries back out. What makes it stubborn is depth. What to check before and after the lift
A repair holds longer when the conditions feeding the active zone are handled too. On a Converse home we look at:
- Drainage slope, finished grade should fall at least 6 inches over the first 10 feet away from the slab on every side; flat or negative grade keeps recharging the clay and can undo good piering.
- Even perimeter moisture, in a dry summer, run soaker hoses a few feet out from the edge so the soil doesn't desiccate unevenly and pull the perimeter down.
