Why steel reaches what concrete piers can't
Concrete pressed piers are stacked cylinders that lean on friction through the soil, which is a problem when the soil itself is the thing that moves. They frequently stop short inside the active clay and drift along with it. Galvanized steel piers are driven in connected sections that advance to refusal on the dense pre-Cretaceous sediment and Edwards limestone underlying the prairie, well below the zone that wets and dries.
