Pressed piers hold by friction inside the clay column, the same column that's swelling and contracting, so on high-plasticity terrace soil they can migrate and lose holding depth. Driven steel advances past the clay to inert ground, and the galvanized coating resists the moist, chemically active conditions near creek drainages.
