A dome in the center usually means moisture trapped under the slab heaving the interior up; a sagging perimeter points to soil shrinking or eroding out from under the edge beams. The pattern carries as much information as the number.

Magnitude alone can mislead you. A one-inch drop measured across an entire 60-foot house, gradual and even, is a different animal than that same inch concentrated over a two-foot span, the second is a localized loss of bearing or a point load, and it changes the repair scope. The survey separates uniform tilt from sharp differential, which is the line between cosmetic and structural.

On the east-side clay, the inspector is also weighing depth against the active zone, the layer where seasonal moisture swings drive the clay up and down, typically 10 to 20 feet here. If a previous repair used pressed-concrete piers that stopped at 8 or 12 feet, they're parked inside that moving soil and the survey will often show the house cycling right back. West of the escarpment the read shifts to bearing continuity: probing for soft seams and voids in the limestone where adjacent piers may sit at very different depths.
