What to watch for on a Hutto lot

These are the signs that the deep clay is working on your slab, worth a closer look before they widen:

  • Moisture lopsidedness around the perimeter, a mature tree within about 20 feet, a broken irrigation zone on one side, or water ponding by a single downspout, drying and wetting the clay unevenly.
  • Horizontal cracking in the brick veneer along a mortar joint, which reads as downward settlement, versus stair-step cracks climbing toward a corner, which point to lift.
