Why a Hutto slab starts dropping at one corner

Reaching past the clay is the whole point
A pier that stops inside that 10-to-15-foot active zone just rides the seasons along with the soil around it, it'll move again the next wet spring. Depth isn't a preference here, it's the structural requirement.
Our hydraulic drive pushes galvanized steel shaft sections through the unstable clay column until resistance confirms we've hit competent load-bearing material.
