Because each pier is pushed by the weight of the structure itself, it won't lock off until it meets resistance strong enough to carry that section of the foundation, a built-in verification, section by section.
The galvanized finish matters here specifically: the alkaline, moisture-variable soils along a creek drainage are corrosive over decades, and plain steel doesn't hold up to that the way galvanized does.
What the free elevation survey tells us before anything starts

What reads from inside as one settling corner often turns out to be heave in one zone and settlement in another, and only measured data separates the two.
